Queensland Women’s week event at Gheerulla Hall

Queensland Women’s Week came to Gheerulla on Tuesday 7 March 10.00 a.m, at Gheerulla Hall

In 2016, Queensland expanded International Women’s Day celebrations to a week of events and activities to celebrate women’s contribution to economic, political and social aspects.

Queensland Women’s Week 2017 was held from March 6th -12th with the theme

Queensland Women: Be Involved. Lead the Way.”

With the support of the YWCA and the Qld. Justice Dept., there was a free seminar at Gheerulla Hall on Tuesday March 7, with Invited speakers Elaine Bradley and Leanne Wood.  The aim is to celebrate the contribution of women to their community, encourage and inspire Queensland women and girls to continue to participate and pursue leadership positions in their community, and workplace, and to raise community awareness of the benefits of having women in decision-making positions.    Elaine is well known to Mary Valley locals, and has an extensive background in community development particularly in relation to quality food production.  Leanne is a ‘tree-changer’ from Kenilworth and student at Griffith University, researching the role of women as major contributors to the wellbeing of the Mary Valley community.

Any agenda items, please let Kathy Mullins know beforehand (you can comment here if you wish).

The meeting won’t be long, but will bring up some matters to be finalised at the AGM in March. If you’re thirsty, we can manage a cup of tea.

Let’s kick off the New Year with a family-friendly fun sports day at Gheerulla Hall! All members, families and their guests welcome.

The day is free to all, so come along and enjoy.

The Tennis Courts will be available for some non-Davis Cup standard tennis (unless our fabulous Tennis Champs play!).

Come to Gheerulla Hall and Tennis Courts at 5.00pm on Australia Day to have fun playing tennis, boules, table tennis, croquet, board games and other games. Or bring your own one to share! If you have any games you want to contribute, or organise, please let us know. As long as it’s fun!

Bring your own food and drinks for a BBQ as well. BBQ will be available, but if you can let us know you’re coming (phone Kathy 045 804 7272) that’s a help with our preparation.

And looking to the future, a General Meeting is planned for 5:30pm 1st February 2017, so mark the date on your calendar. Repairs of the hall are well underway but will be ongoing. The hall at present is suitable for use for classes and workshops run on regular basis by local residents and organizations. For those interested in using the hall weekly or monthly, these arrangements can be discussed at the General Meeting on the 1st February.

Gheerulla Hall Committee

The Cent Sale

Friday 9th December 2016

The Cent Sale (click to enlarge)

Well, wasn’t the Cent Sale fun!

What a wonderful job Heather Wagner did organising it! Pierre Eiras played beautiful background music on the piano. Dennis Wagner provided a yummy sausage sizzle. Wayne Paulger did a fantastic job calling out the winners and keeping up an entertaining patter while doing so. Everyone wanted to win Joyce Wood’s sponge cakes. The wine and cheese platters were very popular items. Major prizes included a gift tray with a Magnum of Champagne and a leg of ham. Another major prize was a table and chair set. There were so many fantastic prizes!

Four generations of a couple of families attended!

So many people helped with this event — all the locals who donated goods, all the great cooks who donated cakes, slices, and biscuits, all the craft ladies who have been busy making gifts, and all the amazing businesses in Kenilworth, Gympie and Nambour who donated very generous prizes:
