Free Yoga class Saturday 23rd December 9.30 – 10.30 am.
Gheerulla Hall has welcomed the opportunity to have regular yoga classes at the Hall. Claire Dixon has taught yoga in Melbourne and overseas, and recently began classes in Kenilworth, and now also Gheerulla. Claire’s yoga class has been very popular with many people attending more than one class a week, as they begin to feel the benefit. As thank you to the community, Claire is offering a free class open to all. No bookings required, but please bring a yoga mat if you have one, and arrive a few minutes earlier to get set up. In the busy season of Christmas, take time out to give yourself a treat!
Look forward to seeing everyone!
Cheers! and Christmas Wishes,
Pollyanna
Writing group
Just a quick reminder that the next get-together of people interested in writing is just under a week away, on:
Wednesday the 6th of December at 11am
Always the first Wednesday of the month. At Gheerulla Hall, of course. No need to bring anything
Free.
We will have tea, coffee, cocoa, and probably potato crisps.
A donation to the Hall of a gold coin is welcome, but not necessary.
Uke people and friends
Well, like the mythical phoenix rising from the ashes, the infamous Ukeladies, KUBE, or whatever we were most recently nomened, let us gather again before Christmas. After all, we did gather early in the year and started with a bang, so let’s finish the year likewise. I am suggesting that we gather on Friday 1st December from 2.00 pm onwards, at Gheerulla Hall, and pretend to do uke. Our christmas flourish. SO bring a nibble or two. Friends welcome, (Dee – that means Tina, Pam – can you let Denise know cos her friend in Kandanga who plays uke might come, and Mim, you too) and others. May even plan a lesson!! (Ukulele Underground has Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds?!), but no guarantees – bit like any appliance purchase these days. Or feel free to practise yourself and bring along your latest offering. Let me know if you are interested and willing, otherwise I’ll just eat cake at home without you. I promise Lisa and I won’t sing “Í’m growing a beard down there for Christmas”.
Ever Yours,
Esmeralda
Cent Sale on 8th of December
Time to clear out Aunt Hilma’s whatnot, and give good quality items to us. Or sponsor a prize. Or something. And of course, the Sale itself is a way to get lots of goodies to gift on at Christmas. If you’ve never been to a Cent Sale, time to come to one so you can cross it off your bucket list. Don’t worry tho’- we’ll give you another reminder before the day.
(Sorry, I should have posted this some days ago — Miriam.)
Drum classes at Gheerulla hall?
Hi all. Thanks to Annie, I have met Ziko, who teaches drum classes on a Wednesday night in Gympie. He teaches using djembe, dun-dun, congas, bongos and something else I can’t pronounce. If any of you made it to the Mary River Festival on Saturday, you may have done his workshop and seen all us workshoppers perform (some rhythm which was a mix of latin american, voodoo, samba) which may have been responsible for the rain we had next day!
- Ziko is prepared to come and teach classes every week at Gheerulla Hall, if there is enough interest. Classes usually last 1 1/2 hours for $20, minimum 10 people. He has an hours’ drive each way to get here.
- Day would be Tuesday evening (he teaches Monday and Wednesday elsewhere)
- Time: start time anywhere between 5.00 pm and 6.00 pm. (i.e. 5.00 pm, 5.30 pm, or 6.00 pm)
- Possible start dates – 21 November, or 28 November.
I urge to check out his webpage and Facebook link if you are interested. He also makes African harps, and plays other instruments. If you’ve always had a secret passion for African based drum music (and South American, and Cuban and the rest) then don’t let this opportunity pass.
So we can confirm with Ziko, can you respond to me if you are interested, preferably by 18 November, if we are to start on 21st. Many thanks,
Kathy
Writing Group – second meeting
Please forgive the last minute notice.
If you want to come along to the second meeting of our Writing Group then please don’t be shy. All are welcome.
11am Wednesday 1st of November 2017
It is free to take part. Donation of a gold coin to the hall is optional, not required.
We had a pleasant time last month. I expect we will again.
writing group – afterwards
Our first meeting was fun. There were only three of us. I wonder if there will be more next month.
We sat together at a table, drank coffee or hot chocolate (the tea remained unopened) and discussed a wide range of things, including, of course, writing.
Pat suggested a quick writing exercise, which we tried. It amazed me that it is possible to create something so easily like that, even though I thought it would be difficult to just come up with something on the spur of the moment. I think what helped was the fact that there was no judgement and we didn’t expect anything deep or inspiring. It gagged my internal censor and out popped something I would never have normally thought of.
Thinking about that this morning while I was surfacing from sleep, it hit me how many things I’ll never write because I don’t simply sit down and do so. Time marches on. I’ll never have another now. The minutes are valuable. I should be creating as much as I can before it’s too late. I don’t want to die with all my stories still inside me. That would be a waste.
Come along to the next meeting. Yes, I know it will be during NaNoWriMo. Perhaps we can use that to help us all write more.
EDIT: We’re changing it to 9am on the first Wednesday of each month. Anybody with thoughts on the matter?
Meeting reminder and – Happenings at Gheerulla Hall you won’t want to miss!
First a reminder of the General Meeting this Friday at 5.30 pm at the Hall. All members welcome. Lots to discuss, including where the Hall is going, and planning fun things for the future. There may even be a cup of tea and bikkie after, or something better!
There are two new regular activities stating at the Hall, for your general well-being, erudition and pleasure.
- The first is that we are pleased to welcome Claire Dixon to take a class in gentle Hatha yoga at the Hall on Saturday mornings at 9.30 am starting from Saturday 7 October. Claire is currently teaching two classes in Kenilworth during the week (see the attached flier) and is willing to teach at Gheerulla for all of you who are unavailable during the week. The cost is $10 for an hour of rejuvenation, stretching and bliss. And O the benefits for those of us with dicky backs!
- Miriam is starting a Writers’ group, at 9am on the 1st Tuesday of each month at Gheerulla Hall. A group of people interested in writing will be meeting. The aim will be to help spur our writing and to discuss the craft. Old hands and aspiring writers, those who indulge in NaNoWriMo and those who enter local competitions, people with decades of experience and others who are new to writing — all are welcome. Bring along something you’ve written or just your ideas. Entry is free. We ask, but don’t require, a gold coin donation to the Gheerulla Hall for letting us use the venue.
- Don’t forget too Jo’s Fit Club on Wednesdays at 9.30 am, suitable for all ages, abilities and genders. $10 for a gentle, but all-encompassing workout with a bunch of wild people. You can help your heart, increase energy, stop growing old, reduce wrinkles, and achieve world peace. The closest get fit experience this side of the black stump. Wherever that is.
- And Line Dancing with Irene, if you haven’t yet had a go. Low impact but still weight bearing, and a workout for the brain. Irene is generously taking these classes for only a gold coin donation to the Hall. Move with attitude to all kinds of music – hip-hop, Irish, Doris Day, the Beach Boys, and more. The experts say you can make friends. So there. As well as boost memory, increase flexibilty, diminsigh depression, other stuff, and get sexy legs. Maybe one day the Gheerulla Team my enter a competition! Again, suitable for all comers, ages and genders. That’s on Friday mornings, 9.00 am during summer.
- It’s SCARECROW season shortly, and I propose to put a gallery of scarecrows up at the Hall. You can either make your own, or join in the fun as we try and make some. If you want to help make a SCARECROW to put up at the Hall, respond to this e-mail, with the times you are available, and I’ll set some dates. Probably most afternoons this coming week, as it won’t be so hot. Broom and mop people especially welcome, so don’t throw out that old cleaning apparati – turn into a facsimile of YOU, doing aerobics, of course. Or line dancing. Or writing. Or… we may have some materials and ideas for you to put one together. Get creative! Or help me immortalise insane world leaders in paper mache.
- And cos we’re cultured too, prior to Christmas, we may have some ukulele/music/singing sessions at the Hall on a Friday afternoon. Let me know if you’re a wannabe muso, and dust off your trombone, lagerphone, jug, balalaika, or that one you bought in India, and join in the Gheerulla Ensemble. Dates to be confirmed, but it will be Friday afternoons, probably.yours,Pollyanna
Writing group
9am on the first Tuesday each month
at Gheerulla Hall
(Tuesday, 3rd of October 2017)
FREE
(optional gold coin donation for the hall)
All interested in writing are welcome!
We’ll try to help each other, give tips on things we’ve learned, such as ways to overcome writer’s block and how to find story ideas. Should you write for yourself or for the reader? Should you fit your story to a genre? Should you use a computer or write freehand? If a computer, what programs are suitable?
If you want to attend, but the date and/or time doesn’t suit you, ring Miriam 5472 3151 and we’ll try to work out a better one.
